Massachusetts is best known for the fresh seafood and clam chowder. However, at a closer glance, many people find that this state has a wealth of culinary arts, from culinary programs to a stable restaurant, bakery and pub scene. Boston serves as the hotspot for the culinary arts in Massachusetts, but many other opportunities are available in the high end areas, such as Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
For many students, starting out with a two year culinary program at one of the many community colleges around the state or at a specialty arts school, such as Le Cordon Bleu, can serve as a good starting off point. This allows students who want to move forward to achieve a bachelor's degree and potentially become a manager to have an easy transition into higher culinary arts education. After graduation the salaries vary greatly depending on where students are located. The average in this state is still far higher than that of the nation at $60,000.
Each year, numerous festivals are held to help showcase the talented chefs in the state. These festivals include Fisherman's Feast, Boston Taste of Cape Cod and Nantucket Wine Festival. Each festival provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring chefs to network and create connections within the culinary arts industry. Chefs of all trades have been nominated for James Beard awards, including Jody Adams, chef at a waterfront restaurant Trade, and three chefs from around the state have been nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef.
If you want to study and work in Massachusetts, it is a good idea to attend one of the many culinary schools in the state, such as Branford Hall Career Institute, for example, for a jumpstart to your career.
